Lin Residence

Currently out to tender, Birdhouse’s latest residential renovation project promises to be an exciting one. Located in the heart of the French Concession in Shanghai, our client’s apartment occupies the top floor of a 4 storey building, a fairly simple concrete slab and load bearing wall structure built in the 1970’s, local authorities later decided to add a pitched tile roof (of little function) in order to give the otherwise plain building some character.

Fast forward to today, our client sees an opportunity to convert the covered roof space into a second floor, effectively doubling the size of his family’s home. The additional 55sqm allows for a second living room, bedroom and guest/study, bathroom and an enviable amount of storage. The images below show our design intention for the new floor.

There are still some unanswered questions regarding construction procedure, considering we cannot remove the existing roof. But what project is without it’s own set of quirks and challenges?! We are looking forward to it!
